Is China Repressing or Moulding Religion? ‘Religious Freedom’, Post-coloniality, and the Chinese State Building

This article focuses on three conceptual lenses through which a better understanding of the politics religion in contemporary China is expected to obtain. On basis genealogical and discursive analysis ‘religious freedom’ as paradoxical concept institution, by identifying ‘post-colonial’ condition China, this argues for non-dichotomous Chinese Western political approaches religious freedom attempts further locate real logic Communist Party’s agenda ‘Chinese state building’. Four interrelated factors, i.e. China’s economic development, nationalism, authority Party, international relations global competition, that are especially important Party governments at all levels their setting implementing policies considered, order provide an explication dynamic, multiple forms negotiation between modern secular its ‘heterodoxies’ define mainland China.
